Skeletal System A&P Ch.6 Flashcards
What are the functions of the Skeletal system?
Support, Protection, Bodily movement, Mineral storage, Formation of blood cell (Hemopoiesis), Helps us breathe
How are bones classified?
By shape
What are the type of bones?
Long Bones, Short Bones, Flat Bones, Irregular Bones
Examples of long bones:
Humerus, Femur
Examples of short bones:
Wrist bones
Examples of flat bones:
Skull, ribs, breast bone
Examples of irregular bones:
vertebrae
Bone is covered with….?
Periosteum
What are the functions of the periosteum?
- Contains blood vessels that transport blood and nutrients into the bone to nurture the bone cell
- Contains lymph vessels, nerves, and cells that tear down and rebuild bone
- Acts as an anchor point for ligaments and tendons
Epiphysis
End of the bone
Region between or “running through” the two ends
Diaphysis
What is in the middle of the diaphysis?
Medullary cavity- a storage area for bone marrow
What kind of bone tissue is Dense, hard tissue (strong structure)
- Normally found in the shafts of long bones and the outer layer of other bones
- Material is tightly packed; Contains osteons (haversian systems) that have mature bone cells (osteocytes) that form concentric circles around a central canal containing blood vessels
compact
Define spongy bone tissue:
arranged in bars and plates called trabeculae
- Lined with endosteum
- Purpose: helps make the bone lighter in weight and provides space for red bone marrow
