Tissues and Organs Flashcards
What is cell differentiation? What determines the role a cell will have?
The process of assigning a role to a stem cell determined by what gene are expressed
What kinds of things determine gene expression?
Cell signaling, exposed genes on chromosomes, modifications on RNA, proteins that bind to DNA (enhance or silence transcription)
What are stem cells?
Cell that have not been given a function
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells that carry out a specific function (mainly attached together)
What do adhesion proteins do?
allow cells to stick together or extracellular matrix
What is the extracellular matrix?
A complex network of non-living material (mostly proteins) surrounding cell
What is an organ? What are organs made out of?
A structure made of two or more tissues that work together carrying out a function
How do specialized cells work together to produce an organ?
organs often require the cooperation of many cells with different roles in order to work properly (Heart - spreading oxygenated blood to body)
