Intro to Cells Flashcards
What is cancer?
disease of the cell cycle caused by genetic mutations leading to uncontrolled growth and division
What is a cell?
The smallest unit that can live on its own
Difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic
Prokaryotic: Lack membrane-bound organelle, genetic material lays free in cytoplasm, simple
Eukaryotic: membrane-bound nucleus storing genetic material, membrane-bound organelles performing specific functions (nucleus, ribosomes, cell membrane), complex
What is a membrane-bound organelle?
Organelles protected from cytoplasm by an outer layer (found in eukaryotic cells)
What are the four macro molecules?
Carbs (energy), Lipids (energy storage), Proteins (diverse functions), nucleic acid (genetic material)
What is cellular respiration?
Process in which cell obtains ATP
Why do cells need ATP?
ATP is the currency of the cell - main energy source
What are some other needs of the cell?
Oxygen, water, nutrients (amino acids, phosphorous, sugars), energy, waste removal
