Tissues Flashcards
1
Q
Epithelial
A
- Epithelial tissue consists of one or more sheets of cells connected to each other with a layer of extracellular matrix, called the basement membrane.
- Forms a boundary between different environments and regulates exchange of material between internal and external environments.
- Epithelial tissue covers body surface (i.e skin)
2
Q
6 main functions of Epithelial tissue
A
- Absorption
- Protection
- Excretion
- Secretion
- Filtration
- Sensory Reception
3
Q
Connective
A
Connects body parts together and is a common type of tissue.
4
Q
Types of connective tissue
A
- Bone: Basic framework of the body, protection of organs within spaces in skeleton
- Cartilage: More flexible than bone, it’s major cell type is chondrocytes and only a few places found in the body.
- Dense connective tissue: Rope-like structures like tendons and ligaments.
- Loose connective tissue: Softer, more cells and fewer fibre than any other connective tissue.
- Blood: Consist of blood surrounded by non-living fluid matrix called blood plasma.
5
Q
Muscle
A
Able to contract and shorten generating the force to produce movement.
6
Q
Types of muscle tissues
A
- Skeletal - Connective tissue into skeletal muscle which are attached to the skeleton.
- Cardiac - As it contracts the heart pumps blood through the blood vessels.
- Smooth - Found in walls of hollow organs like the stomach and blood vessels.
7
Q
Nervous
A
Found in the brain, spinal cord and nerves. It is responsible of coordinating and controlling the many body activities. It is made up of cells called neurons.
- They consist of three basic parts: the cell body, an axon, and dendrites.
