Cell Structure and Function Flashcards
1
Q
Cell Membrane
A
- Separates the cell’s internal environment from the external surrounds.
- Selectively permeable barrier that controls the movement of substances going in and out.
2
Q
Cytoplasm
A
- Gelatinous fluid that is filled in the interior of the cell where numerous organelles are placed.
3
Q
Nucleus
A
- Control centre of the cell
- Contains cells genetic material in the form of DNA which controls the cells activity and characteristic
- Nucleus envelope contains nucleolus and chromatin
4
Q
Mitochondria
A
- Powerhouse cell
- Generates energy in the form of ATP through a process called cellular respiration.
5
Q
Ribosomes
A
- Tiny structure which acts as protein factories.
- Translate genetic information from RNA into proteins
6
Q
Endoplasmic Reticulum
A
- Directs movement of lipids and proteins through the cell.
7
Q
Golgi body
A
- Processing centre for lipids and proteins.
- Modifies molecules before transported to its destination.
8
Q
Lysosomes
A
- Contains enzymes that breakdown waste material, cellular debris and foreign substances.
9
Q
Cytoskeleton
A
- Protein filaments that provide structural support to the cell.
- Facilitates intercellular transport and involved in cell movement.
10
Q
Vacuoles
A
- Stores various components of nutrients for cell survival and waste production
- Breaks down complex molecules.
