Tissues Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of cells that are similar in structure and that work together to carry out a particular task
4 types of tissue?
Epithelial
connective
Muscle
Nervous
Epithelial tissue?
Epithelial, epithelium, is lining tissue.
cells tightly packed together
Where is Epithelial tissue found?
outer layer of skin is epithelial tissue, organs including the heart, kidneys, intestines, liver and lungs are covered with epithelium. also lines the inside of organs.
What is connective tissue?
Provides support, help hold the body together
cells are NOT close together, they are separated by large amounts of non-cellular material, called a matrix
Examples of connective tissue?
includes; bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and fat storage(adipose) tissue blood is often classed as connective tissue. the matrix of blood, liquid in which blood is suspended in
Muscle tissue and the three types?
muscle fibres are long and thin and can contract to become shorter
three types:
Skeletal/striated
Smooth/non-striated
Cardiac
Skeletal muscle cells?
muscles attached to bone. we have voluntary control over these muscles, muscle fibres have stripes; or striations
Smooth muscle cells?
found in the walls of stomach and intestines, wall of blood vessels, in the iris of the eye, in the uterus and many other organs. involuntary muscle
Cardiac muscle cells?
heart muscle makes up most the heart. involuntary muscle. intercalated discs.
Nervous tissue?
nerve cells (neurons). long projections from the body of the cell. when a neurone is stimulated, messages can be carried through the projections.
Where is nervous tissue found?
Spinal cord, Brain and Nerves
