Tissues Flashcards
Simple Squamous
1 layer flat eggs, line capillary walls, blood vessels, and part of serous membranes. Site of osmosis, filtration, and diffusion and produce serous fluid
Simple Cuboidal
single layer of cube shaped. In many glands of body- secretions in glands and kidneys; absorption in kidneys
Simple Columnar
Nonciliated, single layer column shaped cells that contain goblet cells that produce mucous. Line the digestive tract to help absorb nutrients, and help produce mucous in some of respiratory and reproductive tracts
Pseudostratified Columnar
Columns with Cilia and goblet cells to create mucous. Line passages of respiratory system. Mucous traps bacteria and cilia moves it up and out
Stratified Squamous
many layers of flat cells that make up epidermis (which is keratinized so its tough and strong) and the lining of mouth and esophagus (non-keratinized). Protect against bacterial invasion, water loss, and mechanical abrasion
Glandular (Stratified Cuboidal)
Have ducts that secrete onto a surface and produce certain secretions necessary for body function such as sweat glands, salivary glands, and pancreas for digestion
Exocrine Glands
Release substances out onto body surfaces
Endocrine Glands
HAVE NO DUCTS, secrete into tissue fluid or blood and produce hormones that regulate body activities eg. pituitary, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries, testes
Eccrine Sweat Glands
Function to cool down skin and opens thru pores on skin surface
Apocrine Sweat Glands
Responds to emotional stressors, common in armpit and groin, produces odor, opens in hair follicles
What is mitosis?
Cell division resulting in 2 identical cells. 1 division only for growth and development
What is meiosis?
Cell division is done twice. Aka “reduction division” - for reproduction
How many kinds of Epithelial tissue are there?
6 kinds
What are the kinds of epithelial tissue?
Simple squamous, Simple Cuboidal, Simple Columnar, Pseudostratified Columnar, Stratified Squamous, Glandular (aka stratified cuboidal)
What are features of epithelial tissue?
One free surface, lack blood vessels, cells packed tight together, MAIN FUNCTION TO COVER AND LINE
What is main features and functions of connective tissue?
To BIND, SUPPORT, and CONNECT. These edges do not touch, have good blood supply so heal quickly, transports wastes, nutrients and gases
What are the 6 types of connective tissue?
Loose (areolar), Adipose, Dense (fibrous), Bone, Cartilage, and Fluid (blood and lymph)
What are the 3 kinds of cartilage?
Hyaline, Elastic, and Fibrocartilage
What are the 3 types of muscle?
Skeletal, Smooth, and Cardiac
What are the 4 types of membranes?
Serous membrane, mucous membrane, cutaneous membrane, and synovial membrane
Where are melanocytes located?
Epidermis
What is purpose of epidermis?
Shield against water loss, prevents dehydration, protects from injury
What is purpose of dermis?
Contains many blood vessels to help regulate body temperature by dilating and constricting. Also has sensory receptors
Where is hyaline cartilage found?
Most abundant one, at end of nose, joint surface of bones, embryonic skeletons of babies, costal cartilage of ribs
