tissue types Flashcards
epithelial tissue
generally covers surfaces of the body that are exposed to the external environment (e.g. the integumentary (skin), respiratory and digestive systems). tissue can be classed as squamous, cuboidal, columnar and transitional, depending on shapes of constituent cells
nervous tissue
comprised of cells capable of conducting electrical impulses used for communication of information called neurons and cells that indirectly or directly support the function of neurons, called glia
muscle tissue
produces motion by generating contractile force. there are three types of tissue: smooth, cardiac and skeletal muscle
connective tissue
consists of cells embedded within a non-living substrate called extracellular matrix. major role of connective tissue is to hold organs (and therefore body) together. e.g. ligaments and tendons. cartilage, bone, blood and adipose (fat) are specialised forms of connective tissue
