bones, joints and ligaments

1
Q

ligament

A

connects bones to bones at joints

composed of connective tissue with largely parallel arrays of collagen fibres or (less frequently) another fibrillar protein called elastin

Q

tendon

A

connects muscle and bone

composed of connected tissue comprised of parallel bundles of collagen fibres

flattened out as aponeurosis

Q

fibrous joints

A

adjacent articulating bones bound together by fibrous (collagen-containing) connective tissue. provide stability but little movement.

suture

A

fibrous joint present between flat bones

e.g. between bones of the cranium in skull

Q

syndemosis

A

fibrous joint between long bones

e.g. joint between lower end of tibia and fibula, just above the ankle

Q

primary cartilaginous (synchondrosis) joints

A

consist of hyaline cartilage. found between developing and maturing bone
in adults, link ribs to costal cartilages

Q

secondary cartilaginous (symphysis) joints

A

surfaces of the articulating bones are lined by hyaline cartilage with a fibrocartilage disc/pad in between
permit a limited amount of movement
all lie on the midline of the body
e.g. intervertebral discs, manubriosternal joint between the manubrium and body of the sternum, symphysis pubis between two pubic bones

Q

synovial joint

A

joint with cavity containing a small volume of synovial fluid
articulating surfaces of the bones covered with smooth, articular hyaline cartilage and lubricated by the synovial fluid (ensuring minimal friction)
joint enclosed by fibrous capsule, lined on its inner surface by a synovial membrane
