tissue fluid formation Flashcards
1
Q
what components make up the blood plasma
A
- oxygen
- carbon dioxide
- salts
- glucose
- fatty acids
- amino acids
- hormones
- plasma proteins
2
Q
how are capillaries adapted to perform a function
A
- they have thin walls with pores
- large surface area
- slow blood flow
- short diffusion distance
3
Q
what is tissue fluid
A
- it bathes all cells
- plasma but without the plasma proteins
- transports oxygen and other nutrients from the blood cells
- transports carbon dioxide into the blood cells
- formed from leakage from capillaries
4
Q
what is lymph
A
- the remaining tissue fluid that did not get returned to the venule end
- collected and drained via the lymphatic system
- has a similar composition to tissue fluid but contains more lipids and less oxygen
5
Q
what are lymph vessels
A
- they are blind ended which creates a drainage system
- they only allow fluid to enter
- they return the lymph to the blood stream via the subclavian vein
6
Q
what are lymph nodes
A
- they are found in the armpit, groin, neck and gut
- they hold many lymphocytes
- intersect bacteria and viruses and help prevent the spread of microbial infection in the body
7
Q
how can having a low number of lipids in the blood affect lymph drainage
A
- they can affect capillary filtration
- may result in fluid retention
- the lymph vessels can become blocked and swollen
