circulatory systems Flashcards

1
Q

what happens in an open circulatory system

A
  • heart pumps the blood into spaces, called haemocoel
  • the tissue bathe in the blood directly and exchange of materials takes place
  • blood flows slowly back into the heart
  • movement of muscles and valves allows assist with the movement of blood back into the heart region
  • in insects there is no respiratory pigments

Q

what happens in a closed circulatory system

A
  • the blood is transported in tubes called blood vessels
  • blood is pumped by the heart at high pressure resulting in rapid flow
  • tissues are not in direct contact with the blood, they bathe in tissue fluid
  • the blood contains a respiratory pigment
