Tissue Flashcards
4 Major Tissue Types
epithelial, connective, muscle, nerve
Largest and most abundant/common tissue, only tissue with an extracellular matrix
connective tissue
No blood vessels (avascular), covers surfaces- internal and external (skin)
epithelial tissue
Classified by shape and arrangement
epithelial tissue
1 row of cells
simple
Surface cells, skin + lungs, flat
squamous
Simple tubulars, kidneys, cube-shaped
cuboidal
More than one row of cells
stratified
Lines body cavities and forms glands
epithelial
Regenerate, repair, and reproduce tissue quickly
epithelial
Finger-like outward
extensions of an epithelial cell. They
increase the top surface area for activities
such as absorption and digestion
microvilli
fine hair-like structures that protrude
outward from the top surface of the cell
cillia
attaches epithelial tissue
to underlying connective tissue
basement membrane
attaches epithelial tissue
to underlying connective tissue, consists of 2 overlapping sub layers
basement membrane
upper layer of basement membrane, made of glycoproteins
basal lamina
lower layer of basement membrane, consists of collagen fibers
reticular lamina
cells that are column-shaped, illusion of more than 1
columnar
covers the skin
stratified squamous epithelium
found in alveoli of the lung
simple squamos
found in kidney tubules, kidney ducts, and glands
simple cuboidal epithelium
found in stomach and small intestine
simple columnar epithelium
found in digestive tract (stomach and small intestine), promotes absorption
simple columnar with microvili
lines oviducts
simple columnar with cilia
found in major airways (lungs, trachea)
pseudostratified columnar tract with cilia
found in trachea and upper respiratory tract
pseudostratified columnar
