Called by urban II, first in 1096, crusades ended the dark ages, invasion of Jerusalem by knights
Hundred Years’ War
Immediate cause was from quarrel over gascony and French Capetian succession, 1337-1453, church and kings suffer, lord-vassal relationship changed to paid contracts
Battle of crecy
French have no plan, English archers devastate french cavalry, follows the capture of Calais
Black prince
Deliberately destroys french countryside, burns crops, homes and steals goods, black prince is heir and goes against religion (kills on sundays, etc)
Battle of agincourt
War renewal in 1415, french lose 6000 (mainly french nobility), England loses 200, Henry V marries king of France daughters and claims throne, Joan of arc approaches french, dauphin continues to rule 2/3 of southern France
Siege of orleans
Joan persuades the dauphin in 1429 to let her lead the army, new confidence, wins battle and changes war, dauphin is crowned, Joan is captured by English and killed
Battle of Poitiers
End of first phase in 100 year war, gains territory for England, constant raids but not always fighting, French king is ransomed
