New structure developed after the fall of rome, the rise of the church and kingship
Kingship
Crated common law, reorganized Roman laws, rise of nation states (north franks, Germanic tribes organizing themselves later establishing the HRE)
what became standardized
Latin and vernacular language under Charlemagne, insisted that sermons be given in vernacular language
How did the kings work within the church?
Divine right of kings meant the church became the kingmaker, establishing royalty divined by god
Feudal pyramid
Meant that a man had to afford to buy a horse to rank above peasantry, (kings, dukes, counts, barons, knights)
Feudalism
Peasants are not apart of the system, the vessel-lord relationships were mutual, lord provides protection and hearing in court, vassal provides military service and attends court
The church split
Split between east and west of Roman and orthodox
The churches role
Spiritual and secular leader as kings the church were involved in the political state and church was feudal landlord, religious wars helped expand the church
Education system
Made available through educating clergy and lords, creating advisors capable of running nations ages
Byzantium
Combo of Hellenistic and eastern, synonymous with wealth and Roman tradition,
Missi Dominici
One secular and one religious would review money together (inefficient and possibility of alliances)
Scriptoria
Monks copying words and establishing latin writing
Carolingian minuscule
Script/writing development to make Latin more recognizable (form of calligraphy)
Carolingian renaissance
Return back to old literature including non-Christian sources, writing of Alcuin of Northumbria
Feudal system
Political and military based system based on land ownership.
