Post exilic
Genesis 12,
God tells Abram to leave his country/family and enter a land that God will show him. God will make of Abram “a great nation,” and that through him, all of the earth’s families will be blessed. COVENANT
Genesis 15
Abram says he’s childless and his slave will be his heir, but God promises Abram will have countless offspring as his heir.
Genesis 17;
God makes a covenant with Abram, promising to make him a father of many nations. God’s covenant with Abraham includes many offspring and the land of Canaan perpetually. God says Abraham and his offspring must keep the covenant by undergoing circumcision. This will be done when each male is eight days old, and foreign slaves are included. Any uncircumcised male must be cut off from God’s people as a covenant-breaker.
Exodus 19-24,
People at Sinai agree to the covenant, plus terms of covenant (10 commands, how to worship, moral/social justice laws). Moses builds an altar and binds the covenant by splashing animal blood onto the people.
2 Samuel 7;
Beginning of Davidic covenant, promising David everlasting lineage.
Jeremiah 31;
God promises a new covenant to transform the relationship between Him and his people. talks about future blessings
Ezekiel 36
Post Israel’s fall and exile. God promises restoration of the land and the people’s spirits. He’s still going to hold Himself to the covenant despite how many times they’ve broken it
