  • April: the first use of poisoned gas. Also Italy joins the conflict on britain and frances side
  • May: german u-boat sinks a british passenger liner called the lusitania sailing from new york to liverpool
  • December: General sir Douglas Haig takes control of British forces on the Western Front. The gallipoli campaign ends

  • June: assasination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand the heir to the austria-hungarian throne by Gravilo Princip
  • July: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
  • August: Germany, France, Russia, Britain join the conflict
  • September- stalemate at the battle of the Marne kicks starts the ‘race to the sea’
  • November: Britain declare the North sea a ‘war zone’ and that any ships entering it do so at their own risk
  • December: The british coastal towns of Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby are bombed by German ships

  • March: The treaty of Brest-Litovsk between Russia and Germany, which offically ends Russias role in the war. Also, Ludendorff Spring Offensive begins
  • April: French Army leader, Ferdinand Foch, becomes Supreme Allied Commander
  • August: The allied counter-attack (later known as the ‘hundred days’) begins
  • October: german sailors based in Kiel refuse to follow orders. News of their mutiny begins to spread to other german ports and towns
  • November: Germany is now fighting alone after the surrender of its allies. The german emporer abdicates. The government that replaces him for an armistice (ceasefire) which begins at 11am on the 11th of November
