Began modern medical science by observing human body effects of disease. Be lived illness was a result of natural causes. Stressed diet and cleanliness as ways to prevent disease.
1200BC - Ancient Greeks
Disease were treated with diet, exercise, and medication. First to organize medical care by providing care to injured soldiers. Early hospitals developed when physicians cared for ill people. aqueducts, city sewers, public baths, drained marshes. ALS - 25-35 years
753 - 410AD - Ancient Romans
The study of medicine was prohibited, emphasis was on saving the soul. Illness an disease were treated by prayer, divine intervention and herbal mixtures. monks and priests provided custodial care for sick people.
Dark Ages 400 - 800AD
A pandemic of the bubonic plague killed 3/4 of the population of Europe and Asia. Arab physicians used their knowledge of chemistry to advance pharmacology. Arabs began requiring that physicians pass examinations and obtain licenses. ALS - 20-35 years
Middle Ages 800 - 1400AD

The industrial revolution took place resulting in major progress in medical science. Ready access to books, development of machines, formal training for nurses, infection control Women became active participants in medicine, Treatments became more specific as causes of diseases were identified.
ALS 40-60 years
19th century
This period has shown the most rapid growth in health care. X Rays, Medicine, antibiotics, vaccines, computer technology. Causes for diseases were identified and treated, patients were able to treat and cure the patient. Insurance plans to pay for healthcare were created. ALS - 60 - 70 years
20th century
The potential for advancement is unlimited. Computers And rapid communication allows the sharing of knowledge all over the world. Genetic research is becoming the future , Human Genome Project, Stem-cell Research.
