Time Based Effects Flashcards
What are the three types of time-based effects processors?
- delay
- reverb
- echo
In reverb, what is direct sound?
the first sound arriving from a sound source
In reverb, what are early reflections?
discrete low order reflections
-single events are heard
In reverb, what is reverberation?
multiple diffuse reflections
Which element of the complete reverberant sound field is the best cue to determine the size of a space?
early reflections
What are the three reverb parameters?
- pre-delay
- early reflections
- reverb time (RT60)/decay time
What are the four types of reverbs?
- ambient/room tone
- acoustical
- mechanical
- electronic/digital
What type of sound does ambient reverb capture?
natural sound of where the recording took place
Which type of reverb is expensive and hard to do well?
acoustical chambers
How does plate reverb work?
- driver vibrates metal plate suspended by springs
- transducers on the plate pick up reverb signal
What are 6 characteristics of digital reverb processors?
- very flexible
- parameter storage and recall
- automation possibility
- broad range of costs
- updateable
- limited lifespan
What are 5 characteristics of hardware based digital reverb processors?
- analog and/or digital interfacing
- single or multiple processing engines
- often internal routing
- often used with consoles
- off-unit storage can be cumbersome
What are 3 characteristics of software-based digital reverb processors?
- require adequate computer resources
- parameters stay within session
- portability
What is convolution reverb?
effects processing based on modeling of an actual space or device
What are the three functions of convolution reverb and how are they related?
- first function is impulse
- second function is audio
- resulting function (reverb/tone) is product of mathematical operation applied
What are the six types of processes related to delay and echo?
- delay
- reverb
- echo
- slap
- doubling
- modulation
How does acoustic delay work?
two mics spaced apart; one close, one far
What is the function for tape delay?
delay is a function of the distance between the record and play heads, plus speed
What is the signal flow for tape delay (3 steps)?
- signal sent from aux send
- tape machine must be in “repro” mode and recording
- signal from tape machine is returned and blended with original signal
How does analog delay work?
- analog delay line: “bucket brigade” of capacitors (chain)
- the longer the delay, the lower the frequency response
How does digital delay work?
- samples signal and replays it later
- frequency response depends on sample rate
