Timber Flashcards
Explain the conversion of tree to timber
After being cut (felled), tree trunks are stripped of their bark and cut into usable planks in a sawmill where they become timber. Planks come in many shapes and sizes.
Explain timber seasoning
Newly cut (green) timber contains alot of moistures, which makes it liable to rotting splitting and warping. To counter this the moisture is removed through seasoning.
Explain the 2 types of timber seasoning
- Air seasoning is when you let the moisture in the timber naturally dry out in air.
- Kiln seasoning is a faster process than air seasoning. Timber is placed into a kiln
which has maximum perfect conditions for most efficient timber drying.
What is sustainable timber?
It is timber gained sustainably. To sustainably manage timber/a forest, companies will have to consider the economic, social and environmental implication of the forest.
What is the FSC?
The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is a non-profit making organisation set up by conservationists to protect the sustainability of forests.
What does it mean when a wood carries the FSC logo?
It means they obtained their wood sustainably.
