Metals Flashcards
What is an Ore
An Ore is a naturally occuring rock that contains a metal
What are the two categories of metals
- Ferrous metals
- Non Ferrous metals
What does it mean if a metal is ferrous?
A ferrous metal contains iron and is magnetic.
What does it mean jf a metal is non ferrous?
It means the metal doesnt contain iron and the majority aren’t magnetic.
List the properties of ferrous metals
- The carbon content make it prone to corrosion when exposed to moisture and oxygen - rust
- Hard
- Malleability related to carbon content: more carbon the harder and less maleable, less carbon the more maleable the material becomes
List the properties of a non ferrous metal
- The fact that it does not contain iron means it is more desirable due to malleable properties
- Resistant to corrosion
- Good thermal and electrical conductivity
- Low density
- Non-magnetic
List some ferrous metals
- Cast Iron
- Low carbon steel
- High carbon steel
List some non ferrous metals
- Copper
- Zinc
- Aluminium
What is an Alloy?
An alloy is a metal formed by mixing 2 or more different types of metals to produce a new metal that has improved characteristics and properties.
Why are alloys used?
Alloys adjust their mechanical and physical properties in order to produce a more suitable material for a particular purpose. They can be both ferrous and non ferrous depending on the metal included.
List 3 ferrous metals
- Cast iron
- Low carbon steel
- High carbon steel
List 3 non ferrous metals:
- alluminium
- cooper
- zinc
What is aluminiums compostition
Pure metal
List the properties of aluminium
- Greyish-white colour
- has a high thermal conductivity
-has excellent corrosion resistance - can be easily cast, machined and formed.
- can be welded but with dificulty
What is the composition of Cast Iron?
Ferrous metal and alloy.
List the properties of cast iron:
Hard, resistant to abrasion and indentation and ductile.
Uses of cast iron.
Pipes, machines, automotive industry, pans
Compositon of copper
Pure-metal, non ferrous
Properties of copper:
Malleable, very good conductor of electricity and heat.
Uses for copper.
Wiring and motors, electrical equipment, building costructions
Composition of zink
Non ferrous alloy
Properties of Zink
Brittle and crystalline at room temp, melleable when heated between 110-150 degrees, high corrosion resistance
Uses for Zink
Used to galvanise steel and iron
Composition of low carbon steel
Ferrou alloy
Properties of low carbon steel
Tough and ductile but relatively soft and weak, rusts if not protected.
Uses for low carbon steel
Car bodies, steel building frames, pipelines
Composition of high carbon steel
Ferrous metal
Properties of high carbon steel
Hard, but brittle, hard wearing, resists abrasion and retains its shapen.
Uses of high carbon steel
Tools, blades, scissors
Composition of tin
Non ferrous pure metal
Properties of tin
Malleable and ductile, high corrosion resistance, good electrical conductor
Uses for tin
Solder, plating surfaces such as cans
