Tides, Tidal Pools And Coasts Flashcards
Describe why tides occur
They are caused by the gravitational forces exerted on the earth by the moon and the sun
How do you determine the tidal range
The difference between the high water and the low water
What is the difference between a spring tide and a neap tide
Spring tides occur during new and full moon phases and neap tides occur during the first quarter and last quarter phases
what is the difference between a direct tide and opposite tide
the direct tide on the side facing the moon and the indirect tide on the opposite side
How many times do high tides occur and how many times do low tides occur in a day
2 and 2
How many times per month do spring tides occur and neap tides
They both occur 2 times a month
Define tidal pool
Rock depressions within the intertidal zone where pools of water collect
Describe life in a tidal pool
Where the ocean Mets land, the organisms adapt really well like crabs, limpets, snails
Name two organisms and their adaptations to live in high tide
Crabs and marine snails and they have thick tough outer coverings to slow evaporation
Name two organisms and their adaptations to live in low tide
Barnacles and mussels and they anchor themselves to the rocks and they also hold seawater in their closed shells to keep from drying out
What are some abiotic factors that all organisms that live in the tide pool or along the coasts have to deal with in order to survive
Temp and sunlight
What are the adaptations for shrimp
They use their walking legs to gather and grab food and they also have pincers and their arms and she’ll to protect themselves
Define coast
The land or area next to the ocean
What is the difference between a primary coast and a secondary coast
A primary coast are processes that occur on land and a secondary coast are processes that occur at sea
What are four examples of primary coasts
Delta, drowned river valley, fault coast, lava coast
What are four examples of secondary coasts
Mangrove swamps, A reef, salt marsh, sea stacks
What is the difference between Terrigenous sand and biogenous sand
Terrigenous sand grains my float but won’t bubble(no reaction) and biogenous sand grains bubble or fizz and move around
What are the characteristics of a rocky shore line
They are exposed to the constant wave and wind action and the temp and salinity change often and there are rock pools
What are some examples of Rocky shore features
Sea caves, Fjord, sea arch, tide water glaciers
What are the characteristics of a sandy shore line
They are sandy beaches in enclosed bays and they have dunes
What is coastal erosion
Is the loss of land due to the action of the waves, tides etc
How is coastal erosion different from coastal deposition
Coastal erosion is the breaking down and carrying away of materials by the sea. Deposition is when material carried by the sea is deposited or left behind on the coast.
What are some man made reasons why coastal erosion occurs
Sand and coral mining
What are some natural reasons coastal erosion occurs
Storms, tsunamis and climate change
How can we help slow down coastal erosion
Sand dunes, sea walls and sand bags
What are examples of organisms adapting to coastal conditions
Marine Iguanas- they have to return to land to warm up.
Sea turtles- they must come to land to lay their eggs.
Night herons- beaks are long so it is easier to get food and stuff.
Why is the seastar a keystone species
It helps define an entire ecosystem by keeping populations of mussels and barnacles in check
What would happen to tide pools if seastar wasting disease becomes more widespread
The sea stars will die and then after 5 years there will only be one organism that remains in the tide pool
