Open Ocean Flashcards
What is heat capacity
is a measure of the heat required to raise the temperature of 1g of a substance by 1 Celsius. In this example, water has a very high heat capacity.
How does the density of water change as it warms, cools and freezes
The warmer the water, the more space it takes up., When water decreases in volume, it becomes more dense., increase the space between molecules, causing a decrease in overall density.
What happens to the speed of water as it warms, cools and freezes
movement of water molecules increases., When water is cooled, the water molecules move slower and get closer together., when the water freezes the molecules start to move slower.
What is the difference between a thermocline, pycnocline, halocline
The pycnocline is when water becomes much denser with depth. The thermocline is a region where water abruptly becomes much colder with depth. The halocline is how the salt concentration in a body of water increases with depth.
