Tides Flashcards
What is a tide?
A predictable, daily rise and fall of sea and ocean levels.
How many times a day do we have high tide?
Twice.
How are tides formed?
Tides are formed by the moon’s gravitational pull on the Earth but since the moon cant actually pull the Earth the Earth will also pull back which creates a bulge on bot sides of the moon like East and West will have Low tide but North and South will only have High tide. This happens twice a day. And we call this a bulge.
How are spring tides formed? and what is a spring tide?
A spring tide is the a tide that occurs only twice a month and is the biggest tide of that month because when the sun and moon in line with the Earth the gravitational force pulls it even more.
What is a neap tide and how is it formed?
A neap tide appears twice a month and is a little bigger than low tide it forms by the Sun and the Earth in lining with each other without the moon helping.
What is a Intertidal Zone?
A intertidal zone is an area of a shoreline that lies between the high tide and low tide line.
What are the five main intertidal zones?
- Subtidal Zone
- Low Tidal Zone
- Mid Tidal Zone
- High Tidal Zone
- Splash/Spray Zone
What animals live in the low tidal zone?

What animals live in the mid tidal zone?
Mussels, isopods and sea star etc.
What animals live in the high tidal zone?
Barnacles, limpets and sculpin etc.
What animals live in the splash/spray zone?
Isopods, periwinkle snail and hermit crab. etc.
