Tibiofibular Joints Flashcards
How many tibiofibular joint are there?
Two – proximal and distal
What are the functions of the tibiofibular joint?
Minimal role in movement that greater role in stability and weight-bearing
What type of joint is the proximal tibiofibular joint?
Synovial plane joint
What structures support the proximal tibiofibular joint capsule?
Anterior and posterior superior tibiofibular ligaments
Lateral collateral ligament of knee joint
Biceps femoris
Where are the anterior and posterior superior tibiofibular ligaments found?
Between fibular head and lateral tibial condyle
What is the blood supply to the proximal tibiofibular joint?
Inferior genicular arteries
What is the innervation of the proximal tibiofibular joint?
Common fibular nerve
What type of joint is the distal tibiofibular joint?
Fibrous joint – joint surfaces are bound by tough fibrous tissue
What are the supporting structures to the distal tibiofibular joint?
Interosseous membrane
Anterior and posterior inferior tibiofibular ligaments
Inferior transverse tibiofibular ligament
What is the interosseous membrane of the tibiofibular joint?
Fibrous structure that spans the length of the tibia and fibula
What is the inferior transverse tibiofibular ligament?
Continuation of the posterior inferior tibiofibular ligament
Does the distal tibiofibular joint have a joint capsule?
No as it is not synovial joint
What is the arterial supply to the distal tibiofibular joint?
Branches of the fibular artery and the anterior and posterior tibial arteries
What is the innovation of the distal tibiofibular joint?
The deep peroneal and tibial nerves
