Ankle Joints Flashcards
What is the ankle joint also called?
Talocrural joint
What is the ankle joint between?
Tibia and fibula and foot (talus)
What type of joint is the ankle joint?
Hinge type joint
What movements are allowed by the ankle joint?
Dorsiflexion and plantarflexion
What does a tibiofibular ligaments form for the ankle joint?
A bracket shaped socket covered in Hyaline cartilage
Called a mortise
What is the most stable movement of the ankle joint?
Dorsiflexion – the anterior part of the talus is held in the mortise. In planter flexion the posterior part is held in mortise
What is the medial ligament of the ankle joint?
From the medial malleolus consists of four ligaments that from out from malleolus attaching to talus, calcaneus, and navicular bones
Also known as deltoid ligament
What is the main function of the medial ligament in the ankle joint?
Resists over eversion of the foot
What is the lateral ligament of the ankle joint?
From the lateral malleolus and is part of three distinct ligaments
What is the main function of the lateral ligaments of the ankle joint?
Prevent over inversion of the foot
What is the three lateral ligaments of the ankle joint?
Anterior talofibular – between lateral malleolus and lateral aspect of talus
Posterior tallow fibular – between lateral malleolus and posterior aspect of talus
Calcaneofibular – between lateral malleolus and calcaneus
What muscles produce plantarflexion?
Posterior compartment of the leg
Gastrocnemius, soleus, plantaris, posterior tibialis
What muscles produce dorsiflexion?
Anterior compartment of the leg
Tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus
What is the arterial supply to the ankle joint?
Malleolus branches of the anterior tibial, posterior tibial and fibular arteries
What is the innervation of the ankle joint?
Tibial, superficial fibular and deep fibular nerves
