Tibia Flashcards
Describe the proximal end of the tibia.
. Lateral and medial condyles
. Tibial plateau flat bits across the condyles
. Intercondylar eminence between the condyles
How does the tibia join with the femur?
Tibial intercondylar tubercles join with intercondylar fossa of femur
Where is the tibial tuberosity? What attaches here.
Tibial tuberosity is on anterior surface of proximal tibia, just below the condyles. The patella ligament attaches here.
What does the intercondylar eminence consist of? What attaches here?
Consists of the intercondylar tubercles and roughened area between them, which articulates with the intercondylar fossa of the femur
Why are the medial and lateral condyles functionally important?
They widen the proximal end of the tibia, helping with weight-bearing
How does the tibia join with the femur to form the knee joint?
Tibial plateau joins with femoral condyles
Name the surfaces of the tibia
Anterior, lateral, posterior
What is found on the anterior surface of the tibia?
Tibial tuberosity
What is periosteum/periosteal covering?
A membrane covering the surface of all bones, except at the joints of long bones
Where is the tibial periosteal covering most at risk of damage? How is this presented?
Most at risk at the tibial tuberosity, presents as bruising
What is the soleal line?
Ridge of bone on posterior surface of tibia, runs inferomedially then blends with medial border of tibia
What is another name for the lateral border of the tibia? Why is it also called this?
Interosseous border because this is where the interosseous membrane binds the tibia and fibula together
What is the medial malleolus?
Bony projection of tibia that pokes outwards and downwards on the medial side
How does the medial malleolus contribute to the ankle joint?
Articulates with tarsal bones to form part of ankle joint
Which tendon sits in the groove on the posterior surface of the distal tibia?
Tendon of the tibialis posterior
