Bones of the Foot Flashcards
How many tarsal bones are there?
7 (talus, calcaneus, navicular, cuboid, and 3 cuneiforms)
Name the 7 tarsal bones.
Talus (biggest), calcaneus (behind talus), navicular (under talus, boat shape), cuboid (looks like a cuboid), and three cuneiforms (little cube-like bones)
How many metatarsals are there?
5, one for each toe
How many phalanges does each toe have?
The big toe has 2 phalanges, all the other toes have 3
Describe the three articulations of the talus bone.
. Superiorly- attaches to tibia and fibula at ankle joint
. Inferiorly- attaches to calcaneus at subtalar joint
. Anteriorly- attached to navicular at talonavicular joint
Describe the two articulations of the calcaneus
. Superiorly- attaches to talus at subtalar joint
. Anteriorly- attaches to cuboid bone at calcaneocuboid joint
Where is the calcaneal tuberosity found? What attaches to it?
Found on posterior side of calcaneus. This is where the Achilles tendon attaches.
What does the navicular bone articulate with?
Articulates with talus posteriorly (talonavicular joint), cuboid laterally, and cuneiforms anteriorly
Where does the tibialis posterior tendon attach?
To a tuberosity on the plantar side of the navicular bone
How many tarsal bones are there in the proximal, intermediate row, and distal rows?
Talus and calcaneus are proximal, navicular is intermediate, cuboid and cuneiforms are distal
Which tarsal bones are medial and which are lateral?
The talus, navicular, and cuneiforms are more medial. The calcaneus and cuboid are more lateral
Which muscle attaches to the groove in the cuboid bone?
Fibularis longus
Describe the articulations of the cuneiform bones.
They articulate with the navicular posteriorly and metatarsals anteriorly
Why is the shape of the cuneiforms important?
They are wedge shaped to form a transverse arch across the foot
What is a tarsometatarsal joint?
Joint between metatarsal base and cuneiforms of cuboid bones
