What is ‘TIA’?
Transient Ischemic Attack
Define ‘TIA’:
TEMPORARY focal brain or retinal ischemia
caused by vascular dx
clear completely in 24 hr; many clear in 1 hr
more common in advancing age; African/Hispanic
Carotid ‘TIA’ is usually associated with?
lateralizing symptoms
What are examples of lateralizing symptoms?
monocular blindness (amaurosis fugax)
contralateral numbness of face/limbs
cognition, language, behavior may be affected
Vertebrobasilar ‘TIA’ symptoms include:
dysarthria vertigo
dizziness ataxia
diplopia motor/sensory deficits
What does ACUTE care of ‘TIA’ include?
antiplatelets anticoagulants
What percentage of patients have a ‘TIA’ BEFORE a large vessel stroke?
40%
‘TIA’ is a MAJOR risk factor for?
Ischemia
