Thyroid pharmacology Flashcards
levothyroxine
T4 replacement for deficiency - peak after 12 days, fewer side effects
triiodothyroxine, liothyroxine
T3 replacement for deficiency - immediate effect, more side effects, emergency only
NaI, KI
hypothyroidism
carbimazole, methinimazole
inhibit t3/ 4 release from follicles by inhibition of thyroperoxidase (dec. iodination of thyroglobulin)
side effects: hypothyroidism, GI, infection (agranuloytosis, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia) –> bleeding and easy bruising
reduce mass and vascularisation of thyroid pre-removal
high dose iodide
thyroidectomy
treat with t4
propranolol
reduce sensitivity to catecholamines in hyperthyroidism
radioiodine
beta radiation destroys thyroid
lithium
reduce iodination of thyroglobulin
amiadarone
anti arrhythmic - increase iodide
tetracoside
acth analogue to test adrenal function (no improvement in function in Addison’s - autoimmune destruction)
hydrocortisone
treat adrenal insufficiency
metyrapone, trilostane
cushings - inhibit synthesis of cortisol
sermorelin
test GH function (ghrh analogue)
somatotropin
treat gh deficiency
