Thyroid Parathyroid Flashcards
Calcitonin
Where does it come from?
what does it do?
Secreted by thyroid gland in response to hypercalcemia
Puts calcium back into bones
Parathormone action
enhances release of calcium from bone into bloodstream
Most common primary cause of hyperparathyroidism
Adenoma in the gland
Most common secondary cause of hyperparathyroidism
response to conditions that cause hypocalcemia (vitamin D def/malabsorption, chronic renal failure, hyperphosphatemia)
What does elevated alkaline phosphatase indicate (for this chapter)
hyperparathyroidism
Meds for hyperparathyroidism (6)
Alendronate Calcitonin Mithromycin Vitamin D Posphate Furosemide
Intervention for hypercalcemic crisis
rapid rehydration calcitonin, mithromycin IV bisphosphonates (alendronate) IV/oral phosphate IV/oral furosemide
Calcium resportion
Bone –> blood
Calcium absorption
Blood –> bone
Action of bisphosphonates
Inhibit Ca+ resorption (bone –> blood) , promote calcium reuptake
Action of phosphate
effect Ca+ uptake in the gut
What does hypomagnesemia cause
Hypoparathyroidism
Secondary causes of hypoparathyroidism
CKD
Hypomagnesemia
Medication for hypoparathyroidism
Calcium gluconate
Oral calcium considerations (3)
prednisone can decrease its effectiveness
take with or after meals
if using antacid, take after meals
