What are the 8 clinical signs of Hyperthyroidism?
- Weight loss with ravenous appetite (polyphagia)
- Thyroid nodule (“slip”)
- Hyperactivity
- Vomiting
- Increased vocalization
- Tachycardia
- Hear murmur or gallop
- Thyrotoxic cardiomyopathy
What is the preferred test for Thyroid disease (hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism)?
Serum Total T4 (>40ug/dl)
What are the 4 types of treatment options and examples of each for Hyperthyroidism?
- Medical:
- Oral or transdermal Methimazole - tx of choice for initial therapy- Possible side effects, which include facial excoriations
- Surgical: Thyroidectomy
- Usually bilateral dz requiring bilateral thyroidectomy - Radioactive Iodine:
- I-131; Single dose, requires hospitalization, usually for several days to weeks, depending on state radiation laws - Dietary Therapy:
- Iodine-restricted diet reduces production of T3 and T4 (controversial)
What is Hypothyroidism?
Thyroid glands in the neck produce insufficient levels of thyroid hormone
What is the treatment for hypothyroidism?
Oral Levothyroxine AKA Synthryoid™, Soloxine™
What species does hypothyroid most often affect?
Canines
What is the name of the disease in dogs that has similar signs to hypothyroidism?
Euthyroid sick syndrome
What are the 6 clinical signs of Hypothyroidism?
- Weight gain, obesity
- Lethargy
- Alopecia - often bilaterally symmetric over the lateral trunk, tail, + ventral thorax
- Heat-seeking
- Muscle weakness
- Skin disease - pyoderma, hyperkeratosis, seborrhea, hyperpigmentation
