Addison’s Disease
decreased levels of cortisol & aldosterone
Addison’s Interventions
Hydrocortisone, prednisone/methylprednisolone to replace cortisol; fludrocortisone acetate to replace aldosterone
Adrenal Crisis
What is the underlying cause (omitted meds? new dx?)
Tx with IV cortisol, IVF
Manifestations of Addison’s
Adrenal atrophy: autoimmune, infection, tumor metastasis; personality changes; muscle weakness
Manifestations of Cushing’s
Adrenal: hyperplasia, tumor; muscle wasting: weakness, thin extremities; thinning of scalp hair
Visible signs of Cushing’s on skin
broad, purple striae; easy bruising; “moon face”
Due to risk of fractures in Cushing’s this type of treatment is needed
Gentle treatment and avoiding shear/friction
