Module 4 Exam Flashcards
2 methods to assess gas exchange
ABGs to determine O2 status & oximetry measured with a pulse ox
Gas Exchange
process of transportation of O2 & CO2 in and out of cells
What is a major preventable risk factor?
Tobacco use
Assessment of Adequate Ventilation
- Spinous processes in alignment; scapulae bilaterally symmetric
- AP ratio of 1:2
- Clear breath sounds
S&S of Impaired Gas Exchange
cough, SOB & chest pain with breathing; VS: increased RR, increased temp
What is used to diagnose pulmonary embolisms?
Ventilation-Perfusion Scans
What does a spirometer measure?
The volume of air moving in and out of lungs
Emphysema
loss of lung elasticity; tissue is pink but no difficulty breathing
Nursing Interventions for COPD
no morphine or benzos, teach patient about PLB
What ABG results will COPD patients have?
Respiratory Acidosis
Priority tx for COPD
BIPAP
pharmacological tx for preventing CVA’s from occurring in patients with risk for emboli
anticoagulants: IV unfractionated heparin, Vitamin K antagonists, factor Xa inhibitors, warfarin
antiplatelets: usually the chosen tx, aspirin 81mg is most often used
Statins are effective for those with high cholesterol
