Thyroid Flashcards
Key Thyroid Hormones
Thyroxine (T4): Main hormone; converts into T3 in the body.
Triiodothyronine (T3): Active form; influences cells and organs.
Calcitonin: Helps regulate calcium levels in the blood.
What is the Thyroid?
A small, butterfly-shaped gland in the neck, in front of the trachea.
It produces hormones that regulate metabolism, energy, and growth.
How Does the Thyroid Work?
Controlled by the pituitary gland (produces TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone).
When TSH signals, the thyroid releases T3 and T4 into the bloodstream.

Hypothyroidism: Underactive thyroid (low hormones).
Symptoms: Fatigue, weight gain, cold sensitivity, dry skin.
Hyperthyroidism: Overactive thyroid (high hormones).
Symptoms: Weight loss, fast heart rate, heat sensitivity, nervousness.
Goiter: Enlarged thyroid.
Thyroid nodules: Lumps in the thyroid, may or may not affect function.
Thyroid cancer: Rare but treatable if caught early.
