Describe the thymus
Soft bi-lobed organ
Shrinks in size during lifetime
Where is the thymus located
behind the sternum anterior to aorta
What is the thymus replaced with in elderly?
Adipose and connective tissue
What is the thymus surrounded by and what does it extend into?
Connective tissue capsule that extends inwards and divides into lobules
What do lobules contain?
Lymphocytes-some mature T cells or T lymphocytes-leave thymus to provide immunity
What does the thymus secrete?
Hormones called thymuses- influence maturation of T lymphocytes
Where is the spleen located?
Upper left abdominal cavity
What is the spleen composed of?
White pulp-contains many lymphocytes
Red pulp-contains RBC, macrophages and lymphocytes
What does the spleen do?
Filter blood and removes damaged blood cells and bacteria
