Structure of lymphatic system Flashcards
What do lymphatic vessels do?
Collect and carry away excess tissue fluid from interstitial spaces- eventually returning it to the blood
What are lacteals and what do they do?
Special vessels
Transport absorbed fats to the circulation
What do lymphocytes do?
Defend body against disease
Describe the direction of lymphatic pathways
Lymphatic capillary- Afferent lymphatic vessel-lymph node-efferent lymphatic vessel-lymphatic trunk-collecting dust-subclavian vein
What are lymphatic capillaries?
Tiny, closed-ended tubular vessels extended into interstitial spaces, paralleling the blood capillaries
Where are lymphatic capillaries found?
All over the body, except in the CNS
How do lymphatic capillaries receive tissue fluid?
Through their thin walls and slits between cells
What is tissue fluid called when inside lymphatic capillary
Lymph
What is the structure of lymphatic vessels
Walls are than those of veins but constructed with the same 3 layers
Have flaplike valves
How do larger lymphatic vessels pass through organs
Through lymph nodes- merge to form larger lymphatic trunk
