Thursday 26th Aug Flashcards
What is the Big Bang theory?
The universe expanding from an extremely, small, extremely hot, and extremely dense state
What is the time before the Big Bang called?
The unknown point of origin of the universe is termed the singularity, Before the big bang, the universe didn’t exist, space didn’t exist and time is part of the universe and so it didn’t exist.
What evidence is there to support the Big Bang theory?
- Hubble’s discovery in the 1920s of a relationship between a galaxy’s distance from Earth and it’s speed.
- The discovery in the 1960s of cosmic microwave background radiation
What does the Hubble law state?
the farther away objects are from earth, the faster they are moving away from us
What did George Lemaitre (Catholic priest and Physicist) propose in 1927?
An expanding Universe and single point of origin
What is Cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR)?
leftover heat radiation from the Big Bang
Why is CMBR very cold today?
due to expansion and cooling of the universe
What is the temperature of the Universe?
2.725 Kelvin (-270.4C) - 2.725C above absolute zero
