Q

What is the cocking phase of throwing?

A

The time from when the ball leaves the glove to the point of maximal external rotation of the shoulder.

12
Q

What is the wind up?

A

The initiation of the pitching motion to the ball leaving the glove–the thrower is positioning the body so all the segments can coordinate themselves for throwing. This begins to build up energy from the hips, thighs, and core.

13
Q

What gives time to transfer energy from the lower body and core to the upper body to increase the force of throwing?

14
Q

What is the reason for the cocking phase of throwing?

A

To increase the distance force that is applied to the ball.

15
Q

What movements occur during the cocking portion of the preparatory phase?

A

The stride leg is lifted, moves forward, & then plants.

The shoulder reaches the point of maximal external rotation as well.

16
Q

What is the movement phase also known as in throwing?

A

The acceleration phase

17
Q

What happens during the acceleration (movement) phase of throwing?

A

From when the hand begins to move forward to the point where the ball is released.

18
Q

What happens to the anterior structures during the acceleration phase?

A

They were wound up like a spring and then released to accelerate the ball.

19
Q

What is the most common phase of throwing to produce pain?

A

The acceleration (movement) phase.

20
Q

How fast is the arm moving during the acceleration phase of throwing?

A

However fast the speed of the ball is–for example, if you throw a 98mph fastball, then your arm was moving at 98 mph during the acceleration phase.

21
Q

What is the average speed of internal rotation during the acceleration phase of throwing?

A

6000+ degrees/second.

22
Q

What two things is the follow through phase of throwing divided into?

A

Deceleration and follow through.
