Throughflow, GWF and Channel flow Flashcards
What is throughflow?
movement of water downslope through the soil
What does water move through in the soil?
natural pipes or small tubes called percolines
What can cause percolines?
- roots
- animals burrowing
- layers of soil
What allows throughflow to occur?
capillary action, gravity (to some extent)
How does surface soil differ from soil further down?
surface soil is less compact, newer and has larger particle size
How might throughflow differ in different depths of soil?
faster through soil closer to the surface
What are aquitards?
areas of bedrock with low permeability
What are aquicludes?
areas of bedrock with no permeability
How might aquicludes impact aquifers?
prevent them from being recharged easily
How might channel flow link to overland flow?
if capacity of river is exceed, water flows onto surface of land
