Thrombosis lecture Flashcards
What is post-thrombotic syndrome?
A syndrome characterized by features of chronic venous insufficiency (e.g., pain, edema, venous dilation, ulceration, abnormal skin pigmentation) that develop following a deep vein thrombosis.
What is Virchow’s triad?
Alterations in normal blood flow (stasis)
injuries to the vascular endothelium
Alterations in the constitution of blood (hypercoagubility)
Why does the risk of venous thrombosis increase/decrease in pregnancy?
state of hypercoagubility
- Increased clotting factors
- decreased fibrinolysis
- increased platelet adhesiveness
Venous stasis resulting from pressure of the gravid uterus on inferior vena cava and decreased venous tone
What are the most common inheritable causes of DVT in order of prevalence?
Factor V Leiden Prothrombin G20210A variant Protein C deficiency Protein S deficiency Antithrombin deficiency
What is factor V leiden disease?
Common inherited thrombophilia. Caused by a mutation in the factor V gene that causes resistance to protein C inactivation of factor V. Manifests clinically as increased likelihood of venous thromboembolism.
