Q

White infarcts

A

With arterial occlusions

In solid organs

With end-arterial circulation without a dual blood supply (e.g. heart,
spleen, and kidney)

Tissue with increased density, prevents the diffusion of RBCs from capillaries into the necrotic area

Q

Red infarcts

A

In these infarcts red cells ooze into the necrotic area.

They occur characteristically in the lung and GIT.

These tissues are loose, well-vascularised with overlapping blood
supply, a haemorrhage into the infarct tissue occurs.

They can be caused by venous occlusion, e.g. infarcts associated with volvulus or strangulated hernias.
