Throat Anatomy/Physiology Flashcards
Name the two parts of the oral cavity
Oral vestibule
Oral Cavity Proper
What are the boundaries of the oral cavity?
Anterior-lips
Posterior-palatoglossal arch
Buccal mucosa of cheeks
What is the nerve supply to the tongue?
Posterior 1/3 supplied by CN IX
Anterior 2/3- taste by chorda tympani (CN VII), sensation by lingual nerve (branch of CN V3)
What are the borders of the oropharynx?
Lower border of soft palate to upper margin of epiglottis
Palatoglossal arch to posterior pharyngeal wall
Lateral: faucial pillars & palatine tonsils
What is the nerve supply of the oropharynx?
Pharyngeal Plexus- CN IX and X
What are three subsections of the hypopharynx?
Pyriform sinus
Post-cricoid area
Posterior pharyngeal wall
What are the boundaries of the hypopharynx?
Superior margin of epiglottis to lower border of cricoid cartilage
Continuous with oesophagus
Anterior wall: back of larynx
What is the motor nerve innervation of the larynx?
Intrinsic muscles supplied by recurrent laryngeal except for cricothyroid muscle supplied by external laryngeal nerve.
What is the sensory innervation of the larynx?
Supraglottic: internal laryngeal nerve
Glottic and subglottic: recurrent laryngeal nerve
