Three Reactions Of Acids Flashcards
What are bases ?
A chemical which can neutralize acids and produce salt and water
If a base in soluble in water, what is it called ?
An alkali
What are some examples of bases ?
Copper oxide
Iron hydroxide
Sodium hydroxide
Why- they can all neatralise acids to produce a salt and water
If a base is insoluable in water what is it called ?
Just a base
Remember if a base IS soluble in water it is called an alkali
When we react an acid with a base or an alkali what do we produce ?
A salt and water
How do we identify the salt when an alkali reacts with an acid ?
Water the salt that isn’t water
So if the products are NaCL and H2O
The salt is NaCL
What do salts contain ?
Positive ion which comes from the base or alkali
Negative ion which comes from the acid
What does… producd
1. Hydrochloric acid
2. Sulfuric acid
3. Nitric acid
- Chlorides
- Sulfates
- Nitrates
Predict the products of sulfuric acid and zinc oxide ?
we have the base zinc oxide with the positive zinc ions
Sulfuric acid produces sulfates
Zinc sulfate+ water
What do all metal carbonates contain ?
CO3 and a metal ion
When acids react with metal carbonate what are the products ?
Salt, water and carbon dioxide
How do you tell if a compound is an alkali ?
Often metal hydroxides ending in OH
What is the difference between a base and an alkali ?
Both will neatrualise an acid to produce a soluable salt and water
But
An alkali is soluble in water and aqueous solution where as a bass is insoluble
What are two types of bases ?
Metal oxides
Metal carbonates
