Required Practical: Making Soluble Salts Using An Acid Flashcards
Where could the metal ion Cu2+ in the salt CuSO4 come from ?
Copper
Copper oxide
Copper hydroxide
Copper carbonate
Where could the negative SO42- ion in CuSO4 come from ?
Sulfuric acid
Will making a salt using a metal carbonate have the same steps as making a salt from a metal sulfate ?
Yes just say the same thing but change the wording
What are the five pieces of equipment we use for the first stage of making a salt?
Bunsen burner
Tripod
Heatproof mat
Gauze (goes over tripod)
Beaker ( placed on the Gauze)
What are the steps for making a soluable salt ?
- Start with a fixed volume of dilute sulfuric acid ( limiting reactant)
- Gently heat the acid to almost boiling
- Using a spatula add a small amounts of copper oxide into the acid until it’s in excess ( powder is left after stirring)
- Stir using a glass rod
Why do we add our base until excess ?
To ensure all of the acid has reacted
- Once all the acid has reacted what do we do ?
- Remove the unreacted base (it’s insoluble so we can filter it out)
- Use a filter funnel and filter paper and filter the solution
- After filtering the solution what do we do to get the salts ?
Place the filtrate in an evaporating basen and gently heat with a Bunsen burner over a beaker of boiling water
Heat until half the solution remains and leave it for 24 hours of copper sulfate crystals to form
Finally remove the crystals and pat them dry with a paper towel
Now you have our crystals !
