Strong And Weak Acids Flashcards
What do all acids produce in aqueous solution ? Bonus what even is an aqueous solution. ?
They always produce H+ ions
Dissolved in water
Example
HCL —-> H+ + Cl-
What is it called when the acid splits to make the H+ ions ?
Ionized
So In an aqueous solution, acid molecules ionize and release H+
What is an example of a strong acid ?
HCL- hydrochloric acid
H2SO4- sulfuric acid
HNO3- nitric acid
What do strong acids do in aqueous solutions ?
Strong acids fully ionize in aqueous solutions ( this is the definition of a strong acid)
What are weak acids ?
Acids that partially ionize in aqueous solutions
By looking at a reaction how can we tell an acid is weak ?
The arrow will point both ways <—->
What are three weak acids ?
Carbonic acid
Ethanoic acid
Citric acid
What do the PH scale indicate ?
The concentration of hydrogen ions produced by an acid
What pH will strong acids have ?
A lower pH than weak acids for a given concentration
Meaning numbers like 1 and 2 are very strong acids
Why: they fully ionize producing a greater concentration of hydrogen ions
As the pH scale decreases by one unit what happens to the concentration of hydrogen ions ?
They increase by ten times
What do scientists call the ten times difference between pH?
One order of magnitude
So pH 1 - 3
pH1 has 100x higher concentration of H+ ions than pH3
What does the concentration of an acid tell us ?
The amount of acid molecules in a given volume of solution
Explain concentration with simple terms ?
A dilute acid molecules in a given volume than a concentrated acid even if the strength of the acid is the same
