China currently relies on coal fired power stations (70%) and so China sees hydroelectric power as a clean energy with which to support its rapid industrial growth.

The 18,000MW of water-generated electricity can save 50 million tonnes of coal w year, the project will supply water to a region responsible for 22% of China’s GDP and Flood Protection could save many lives and cut financial losses created by flood damage.
