Location
Floodplain of the Buriganga River on the lower reaches of the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta in Bangladesh.
After 1988 floods.
The Dhaka Integrated Flood Project (DIFPP) was set up focused on structural measures, such as building embankments and levees to hold back floodwater’s.
Problem with DIFPP after 1988
The plan was to over 260km2 of Dhaka, but not enough money could be raised for the entire area so the more densely populated western part of the city was protected first.
In 1998
Dhaka was badly flooded again. Water entered the part of the city which was protected through buried sewage pipes and through breached and incomplete floodwalls. the city’s pumping stations could not cope and there was a lack pf co ordination.
Costs of the 1998 event
Repair costs were estimated at well over $200 million, and disease spread because much of the drinking water was contaminated by dirty floodwater.
After the 1998 event.
Phase II of DIFPP was introduced aiming to protect eastern parts of Dhaka, implement no structural solutions such as better forecasting and waning and improving coordination between agencies responsible for flood protection and drainage of the city.
2004
Despite all attempts Dhaka flooded again For nearly 3 days in July, life in the city came to standstill. People were forced to stay at home, businesses came to a halt, and there was another shortage of clean drinking water.
