The 1960s

1990
Culmination of the projects with the completion of the Ataturk Dam, which is 200m high and more than 1.5km long.
Water Supply before and after
Before the dam 30 cubic kilometres of water passed along the Euphrates. The dam has reduced this by almost a half.
Syria
Annoyed with the creation of Ataturk Dam. They were developing plans to harness the river for irrigation and electricity. the Thawra Dam at Tabaqa created an artifical lake holding 12 billion cubic metres of water.
Baghdad
Creation of the Thawra dam angered them by reducing the amount of Euphrates Water downstream. In 1974 Baghdad threatened to bomb the dam and moved troops towards the border.
Agreement
In 1998 Syria and Iraq agreed to work together against Turkey’s activities on the Euphrates and the Tigris.
