what is threadworm and how long it lasts

A

-it is an endoparasite (worm), lives in the gut
-also known as pinworm
-caused by an infection
-looks like thin white cotton threads
-lasts 6 weeks

how is threadworm transmitted

A
  • normally faecal-oral route
    -retro infection: when the larvae hatch eggs that move towards the anal region

-threadworm are highly resistant to environmental factors and can transfer to clothing, toys etc. but not visible to the human eye

symptoms of threadworm

A

-intense perianal itching (worse at night) due to eggs laid there.
-worms in stool

when is referral needed for threadworm

A

-fever with bedwetting or pain when urinating
-diarrhoea
-vomiting
-unexplained weight loss
-travelling abroad (may suggest other worms)

Treatment for
threadworm

A

-mebendazole (it is an anthelmintic which kills the worm)
-Sold as Ovex (P) brand or Vermox (POM) sold as tablets or suspensions. 2 years and older
-6months-2 years can be pescribed

practical hygiene measures for threadworm

A

-wear loose fitted underwear
-wash sleep wear, bed linen, towels
-cover food at home
-rinse toothbrushes well before use
-shower every morning
-avoid hands in mouth

diagnosis/ test for threadworm

A

sticky tape test: apply a sticky tape to the perianal region at night. In the morning, remove the tape before wiping and place in a specimen container for medical examination. Must be done 3 days in a row.
