what is colic?
recurrent and prolonged periods of infant crying/fussing/irritated. when infant is less than 5 months
clinical features of colic
-Crying which most often occurs in the late afternoon or evening
* Drawing the knees up to the abdomen or arching the back
when crying
* Clenching of the fists
* May go red in face or flushed
causes of colic
-smoking during pregnancy
-tiredness or tension
-bubbles of trapped air in the digestive system
-sensitivity to feed e.g. under or over feeding
differential diagnosis of colic
-GI
-acute infection
-intolerance to cows milk protein
-discomfort e.g. hunger, dehydration
non drug treatment for the baby due to colic
-gentle rocking motion
-gently massage baby’s tummy
-bathe infant in warm bath
-make sure the infant is slowly drinking the milk
practical measures for parents
-ask family for support
-rest when able
-meeting other parents with similar experiences
